What To Do If You Smell Gas or Notice Strange Fumes
Important safety advice from Christy Plumbing & Heating
At Christy Plumbing & Heating, customer safety always comes first. That’s why our policy is clear and consistent: if you ever smell gas or notice unusual fumes or odours, you must act immediately.
These steps follow guidance from the Gas Safe Register and reflect UK gas safety law.

If You Smell Gas or Suspect a Gas Leak
If you notice a smell of gas (often described as sulphur or rotten eggs), or any unexplained fumes:
- Turn off the gas supply immediately
Locate your gas meter and turn the emergency control valve to the off position. - Open doors and windows
Ventilate the property to allow gas to disperse. - Do NOT use electrical switches or naked flames
Don’t turn lights on or off. Don’t smoke, light matches, or use candles. - Leave the property if necessary
Especially if the smell is strong or you feel unwell. - Call the National Gas Emergency Service 0800 111 999 (UK – free, 24/7)
- Only re-enter when it is declared safe
And only allow a Gas Safe registered engineer to investigate and repair the issue.

Strange Fumes or Ongoing Odours? Don’t Ignore Them
Unusual smells that aren’t obviously gas can still indicate serious issues, including carbon monoxide (CO).
Common warning signs include:
- Headaches, dizziness, nausea or fatigue
- Soot marks around appliances
- Yellow or orange flames instead of blue
- Pilot lights are frequently going out
Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, which is why UK law strongly recommends working CO alarms in homes with gas appliances.
UK Legal Responsibilities (Homeowners & Landlords)
Under UK law:
- All gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe-registered engineer
- Landlords must arrange annual gas safety checks and provide tenants with a valid Gas Safety Certificate
- Unsafe appliances must not be used under any circumstances
At Christy Plumbing & Heating, we will never reconnect or work on an appliance we believe to be unsafe.
